Stress and Tension
Stress is a reality of daily life but for many of us it can also be a big problem.
Stress, of course, comes in all shapes and sizes. In daily life, it can come at us from every direction, be it physical stress, emotional stress, or chemical stress. While our bodies are equipped to handle stress, our stress system was generally designed to respond to sudden and short-term stresses only. The problem is that nowadays most of the stresses we encounter are chronic, long-lasting, or recurrent, and this tends to cause an overloading of the stress system leading to pain, tension, fatigue and ill health.
In addition to causing hormonal and metabolic changes often associated with chronic illness, stress can cause a persistent tightening and tensioning within the body. Over time, as this tension accumulates, we start to encounter greater difficulty and a greater propensity towards pain, fatigue, and breakdown.
Compounding this, the accumulation of stress within our bodies also leads to excessive inflammation, and this in turn can cause many disease processes and autoimmune conditions, as well as vicious cycles of chronic pain. Pain and tension messages get sent to the brain signalling that we are under attack, causing further stress, and so the cycle continues and can worsen over time.
