Sciatica and Pinched Nerves
Pinched nerves and sciatica are extremely common, and are something your chiropractor is highly specialised to assess and treat.
The two most common areas for pinched nerves are from your neck (usually into your shoulder, arm or hand) and from your lower back (usually into your hip, buttock, thigh or leg).
The term “sciatica” usually refers to a pinched nerve in your lower back that refers pain into your buttock and down your leg. However, many people use the term sciatica more casually to describe any ache or pain in their buttock, thigh or leg.
Pinched nerves of all sorts may cause compression of the nerve leading to numbness, tingling, pins and needles, burning pain, weakness, loss of reflex, spasm, or swelling at some point down the course of the nerve and into the structures the nerve supplies.
In some cases, an x-ray or MRI may be useful in clarifying the underlying problem. When needed, x-rays can be done at our clinic, and for MRI we will refer you to one of our local imaging partners who can get them done quickly and at reasonable cost. For many, imaging will not be needed and we can commence treatment straight away.
Chiropractic can definitely help with most forms of pinched nerve. Whether due to a disc injury, inflamed joint, spasmed muscle, or other cause, your chiropractor will usually be able to figure it out.
On your First Visit to GB Chiropractic, your chiropractor will work to diagnose your pinched nerve, determine its location and cause, and will explain how chiropractic treatment can help to improve or resolve the issue.
