Posture

Maintaining good posture is downright difficult these days!

By design, our bodies and spines are meant to be upright and moving for most of the day.

Doing so promotes good posture and helps to regulate our vital functions.

However, these days the cumulative effect of desk-based jobs, driving and commuting, and screen time from computers, tablets, TVs, phones, and gaming, mean that many people now sit for up to 10 hours or more each day. Add to this, lack of exercise and other postural stresses from sedentary activities, stooped tasks, or carrying heavy bags, and it becomes easy to understand why our posture might suffer and start to shift over time.

The tricky thing about posture is that negative changes often happen slowly, painlessly, and without our knowledge or detection. It is only once we can see a change in the mirror or when we develop a pain or problem connected to poor posture that we tend to take notice.

Common types of postural changes that people encounter over time include forward head posture, inward rolling shoulders, rounded upper back, a bump or hump at the base of the neck, and stooped or slouchy posture. But many people will also develop a lean, tilt or curve to one side, which can cause them to feel a little wonky.

These sorts of postural changes are often accompanied by neck and back pain, headaches, loss of movement and flexibility, and a sense that we are not as upright nor as straight as we used to be. We also become more susceptible to postural pains and sudden injuries during fairly routine movements, activities, and exercises.

How does chiropractic help?

While we may not be able to change your job, or protect you from every bad posture life demands of you, regular chiropractic care can definitely improve, reverse, reset and resolve many of the effects of poor posture on an ongoing basis.

Chiropractic adjustments can help to realign your spine and body, remove the buildup of postural stress and tension, restore movement where it is lost, and address postural imbalances quickly and effectively as they might develop.

If you sit for more than a few hours each day, then you should consider regular chiropractic care as “postural hygiene” and a vital part of your health maintenance routine.

On your First Visit to GB Chiropractic, your chiropractor will assess your posture and spinal alignment, identify the key issues that should be addressed, and explain how chiropractic treatment can help.

If x-rays are needed, these can be done the same day at our clinic. For many, however, x-rays will not be necessary and we can commence chiropractic treatment straight away.

Alongside chiropractic treatment, we often provide some useful advice regarding posture and exercise, so you can take practical and positive steps yourself.
