Misalignment, Curves, and Scoliosis

Feeling misaligned or a bit wonky?

Your chiropractor is an expert in spinal alignment.

If you have the sense that your body’s alignment is off in some way or you have noticed a change your concerned with, then your chiropractor can help.

On your First Visit to GB Chiropractic, your chiropractor will assess your posture and spinal alignment, identify any key issues, and explain what’s gone wrong and how chiropractic can help. If x-rays are needed, these can be done the same day at our clinic, and in most cases we can commence treatment straight away.

It is quite common that joints can become misaligned. This can occur suddenly through a force, fall, or trauma, or more commonly it can occur very gradually through a slow and steady “drift” of one’s posture.

Misaligned joints can often be painful, but not always – it depends to what degree they are misaligned, how quickly it happened, and whether your body had time to adjust, adapt or compensate.

Where repetitive postures and activities are involved, we will often see that an entire area of the body is misaligned, perhaps involving many joints and a number of muscles. In such cases, we may notice a lean, tilt, or curve in the area. If your spine is meant to be straight but you have picked up a curve over time, then it becomes probable that you will eventually feel some pain, discomfort or tension in a few areas. These types of alignment issues are “acquired” and represent a deviation from your normal. As such they are usually very treatable and respond well to chiropractic care.

What about scoliosis?

If you have had a spinal curvature for most of your adult life then it is likely you have a scoliosis. Such curves can be familial (passed down to you from a parent) or developmental (acquired during your growth years). In both cases, having such a curve may actually represent your normal anatomy and it may not be possible to change the natural shape of these curves to any great extent.

However, what we find with scoliosis is that a curved spine tends to be less stable up against gravity and can therefore be more susceptible to spinal pains, postural drift, and joint misalignments from time to time.

As such, people with scoliosis should definitely see a chiropractor regularly to ensure that their curves are within normal limits and that any alignment issues that might arise around a curved spine can be resolved and managed effectively.
